COMUNICACION Y CREATIVIDAD - LAURA MARAJOFSKY-06_edited.jpg

INNOVATION IN GASTRONOMY

In the last seven years and through my work either as a journalist in the hospitality industry, or as a founder of Mapa de Barmaids & Afines, I worked in the diagnosis of problems related with gender, D&I and health in hospitality.

With our team we started a road of mapping and looking deeply into these issues, and also figuring out ways to attack them in a propositive and creative way. The challenges that the hospitality industry faces in the near future require an intelligent, innovative and empathic viewpoint.

Diversity and Inclusion

Gender 101

Initial training for any type of organization. Each work space is unique and that is why incorporating a gender perspective is a different group and personal process in each case.
It is a daily job, which will not be immediate or successful from the beginning, but once carried out, it will positively change the dynamics and work culture, and definitely, the bond with employees and clients.

Gender and
good practices

We offer practical training aimed at gastronomic staff on gender and current labor law in order to help women and LGBTQIIA+ who suffer symbolic, psychological or physical violence, with the aim that the staff acquire good service and work practices inside the bar and thus promote gender equality.

 ILO Convention

Training for any type of organization. Sexual harassment and workplace violence. The ILO convention protects against violence in the workplace and sexual harassment, for this it is important to understand and contextualize violent situations, approach them in the workplace and know the current regulations. We also offer gender workshops and protocols, awareness sessions and external legal services.

Sensitive communication & yoga

This practical workshop invites participants to connect with their body and movement from an accessible and safe approach. The framework is a yoga class facilitated according to the “Trauma Sensitive Yoga” method, which incorporates elements such as inclusive language, guidance through invitations instead of commands (prioritizing non-verbal violence), trauma and attachment theory and neuroscience.

It is an ideal method to work on group dynamics to become aware of the individual position, improve empathy, emotional regulation and bonding with others in a work environment.

Research & Data Analysis

From our Gender and Health in Hospitality Observatory, we have been surveying gender, health and current relevant topics in the sector for more than three years. In 2023 we published the report The B Side of Hospitality: Sexism and Precarity in the Culinary Sector (2023) with data from Argentina, Chile and Mexico (650 cases).

This report, the first of its kind, seeks to reflect the reality that many women and LGBTQI+ experience daily in their jobs within professional gastronomy in the region.

Why is it important to survey these subjects?

Having statistical support is important in order to be able to draw up strategies, campaigns and policies aligned with the main challenges and issues of the industry. This allows us to understand much more about what women and LGBTQIIA+ in the field are going through on a daily basis, and that is also consistent with the reports we receive as well as our field experience.

This self-financed action was part of our efforts to make visible and investigate gender problems in the field and promote appropriate public policies.

Now we want to continue the work, we want to expand the sample (we are already collecting the 2nd sample), amplify our work and make an official presentation of the results. For this we need support and that is why we launched this open call.

Mapa de Barmaids y Afines
A feminist and regional platform

The first platform for the visibility and empowerment of women and LGTBQIIA+ in the hospitality sector in LATAM. We are an NGO based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but we map women and professional LGBTQIIA+ in different countries. We work in three areas within the sector: gender, health and education. With seven years of experience, our NGO is already a reference in gender and wellness in the region for putting these topics on the agenda and promoting a 360 look in the industry. We have been carrying out activities against sexist violence, both in the public and private spheres in Argentina and in other countries since 2018, as well as working with international platforms and companies.

Our local and federal network has +800 women mapped throughout the country (Ar), and the regional one has almost 1,500. An enthusiastic foodie community of +20,000 non-professionals also consume our #gastroculture content from any country.
